Researchers at University College Dublin made a review of 21 children who became ill between 2009 and 2024 after consuming a “rough ice drink.”
A vast majority of the children, none of whom had pre -existing medical conditions, became ill within an hour of drinking.

What is glycerol?
“Glycerol is used as a sweetener and to keep the semi -freezing texture of some (not all) rough ice drinks,” Crushell said.
“It is used more often in recent years as sugar,” she noted. “Large doses can be harmful to small children.”

The effect of sudden disease after consuming a rough drink was never reported in medical literature, Crushell noted.
This study had some boundaries, the researchers acknowledged.
“The numbers are small and include only the most sick children who have been brought to emergency departments and who have been reported to specialists on inherited metabolic disorders,” Crushell said.

“They were reported because their symptoms were similar to those of some rare metabolic diseases. We do not know the extent of children who may develop softer symptoms.”
The other limitation is that the amount of glycerol ingested in the various lazy drinks is unknown, she added.
Recommendations for parents
Crushell noted that rough ice drinks “do not deliver healthy advantages at any age” and does not recommend as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

The UK Food Standards Agency and the Ireland Food Authority (FSAI) both issued leadership recommending that children 4 and under avoid consuming rough ice drinks containing glycerol, and for children 5 and until just drinking them moderately.

“The use of slush icy machines by children in the home must be monitored,” Crushell advised. “Parents and guards must control the ingredients of syrups used to make rough tools in the home for Glycerol’s presence and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use.”
The researchers hope that this new study could lead to the development of new policies and guidance in glycerol -ingo.
