In Miami Proud this week, we focused on an inspiring person who refuses to let a horrible accident stop him. Instead, life is living to the fullest and encouraging others to follow their steps.
“The way we respond to situations is completely 100% under our control,” said Alejandro Labrada.
This thought is a testimony of the unwavering determination of Labrada, since it refuses to allow a devastating accident to steal the joy of life.
“It was June 26 at 6 pm that I went to my cousin’s tattoo store, he had just bought his bicycle, and I was very excited to mount it. He always told me ‘No, you can’t’. I thought, ‘Come on, I will just take it to take a walk.’
During the last two years, Labrada has inspired others in Lynn Rehabilitation, serving as a dissemination coordinator for the Miami project to cure paralysis.
“I said that after my accident, I want to change someone’s life for the better,” Labrada said.
The Miami project to cure the paralysis was established in 1985 by the NFL Bumoniconti NFL Hall of Fame and the Neurosurgeon Dr. Barth Green, motivated by the spinal cord injury suffered by Buonicanti’s son, Marc, during a university football game. Promoted by personal tragedy and the commitment to find a cure, the organization co -founded, which since then has become the largest spinal cord injuries in the world.
“We have 40 teachers, direct teams from two to 10 people and Alejandro is often the first point of contact for people who will be in our studies,” said David McMillan, director of Education and Dissemination of the Miami project to cure paralysis.
Labrada feels that an acquired disability is not an ending, it is simply a new beginning.
“I tell you that it is a quite funny life. At this time, in the wheelchair, I can re -mount four -wheel bicycles, I jumped from the planes, I go kayak, I drive my own car, I do anything and everything,” he said.
The Miami project to cure paralysis collaborates with individuals living with paralysis due to spinal cord injuries and other neurological conditions. The Miami project organizes multiple conferences and seminars throughout the year with renowned neuroscientists from around the world, all to promote education and collaboration.
