‘UNSUSTAINABLE’ SITUATION: Staffing shortages force another Northwest hospital to stop delivering babies

A second hospital in Idaho introduced it’s going to cease offering labor and supply providers for pregnant girls within the coming months, citing staffing shortages and different challenges.

“It has been more and more tough and unsustainably costly to recruit and retain a full workforce of high-quality, broad-spectrum nurses to work in a rural setting the place nurses must be proficient in many alternative fields,” reads a press release from Valor Health final week.

The hospital plans to stop supply providers by June 1. The subsequent closest hospital is a 40-minute drive away in Caldwell, the Idaho Statesman reported.

Valor Health expects to ship fewer than 50 infants this 12 months, far under its historic common of 66 infants per 12 months, in line with the hospital.

The hospital is the second to announce an finish to labor providers inside a two-week span. Earlier in March, Bonner Common Health in Sandpoint partially blamed the state’s new abortion legal guidelines for the closure of its maternity ward.

Bonner Common plans to cease accepting new obstetric sufferers and cease delivering infants by Might 19. The hospital cited declining birthrates, lack of pediatricians and Idaho’s “authorized and political local weather” as causes for the closure.

“Extremely revered, gifted physicians are leaving. Recruiting replacements shall be terribly tough,” reads a press release from the hospital.

The Idaho Legislature “continues to introduce and move payments that criminalize physicians for medical care nationally acknowledged as the usual of care,” the assertion continues. “Penalties for Idaho Physicians offering the usual of care could embody civil litigation and felony prosecution, resulting in jail time or fines.”

The Idaho Supreme Court ruled in August that the state's strict abortion bans will be allowed to take effect while legal challenges over the laws play out in court.

Final 12 months, Idaho’s governor signed a near-total ban on abortions within the state, opening the door for medical doctors to be imprisoned as much as 5 years for performing an abortion. The regulation makes exceptions in instances the place a health care provider deems the process obligatory to forestall the loss of life of the pregnant girl, or in instances of rape or incest that had been reported to police.

Whereas Valor Health doesn’t cite state legal guidelines as the rationale for its recruiting difficulties, one physician stated attracting new physicians has been “nearly unattainable since late summer time 2022, which ought to be setting off alarm bells all through Idaho.”

“Household drugs and generalist OBGYN physicians, who handle the overwhelming majority of pregnant sufferers in our state, are additionally signaling a need to restrict their observe, retire early or go away Idaho,” Dr. John M. Werdel, medical director of ladies’s well being care at St. Luke’s Health System, wrote in a latest op-ed.
