Spartan Medical Inc., a small business owned by a veteran of Rockville MD Service Disabled, will add SAS Kerrison to its sterile prepackaged equipment.
Rockville, Maryland, USA, February 10, 2025, / heinpresswire.com/ – Spartan Medical, Inc., a veteran-owned medical solutions company. has expanded its industry-leading portfolio of single-use, sterile, pre-package (SSP). An instrument that includes the new SAS Kerrison (“Sterilized and Always Sharp”).
Kerrison Rongeurs is commonly used in many orthopedic, spinal and neurosurgeries at VA Medical Centers (VAMCS) and DOD Military Treatment Facility (MTFS). For example, when a surgeon performs a laminectomy, the palm bone is removed using Yablison to relieve pressure on the nerves in the dorsal or neck caused by bone spur or henia discs. It is standard practice for the surgeon to perform 40-50 amputations per spine level during a single surgical procedure. Most surgeons will agree that a sharp cut surface is required to ensure accuracy, accuracy, efficiency, and avoid soft tissue damage. One drawback of reusable Kerison is that the cutting surface can be dull, and rather than achieving a clean and accurate cut, the surgeon twists or pulls bone and soft tissue during each pass of the instrument. This is something that may occur (see Figure 1).
Spartan Disposable Sterilization Always Sharp (SAS) Kerrison is a high-quality metal equipment with a reusable Kerison traditional look and feel. However, there is no problem with blunt or deformed cutting surfaces due to continuous use and reprocessing. Surgeons can have confidence that the cut surface of the SAS Kerrison will always be sharper and sharper from the package.
Another advantage of Spartan’s SAS Kerrison or ready-made (OTS) one-legged sterilization equipment is its ability to reduce cross-contamination that can occur with reusable equipment. In particular, Kerison is one of the most difficult surgical devices to clean and sterilize, and has been identified as “the device most likely to cause bioburden/debris events.” (1)
Vince Proffitt, founder and president of Spartan Medical, said, “Surgeons understand the risks of dull Kerison, but the problems are so common that surgeons are “twist and pulling” or “twist.” “Twist and tear” has become almost the norm. Rather than relying on a completely sharp cutting tool. ”
Spartan Medical uses the new SAS Kerrison to enable the VA and DOD medical community to rely on top quality surgical tools. SAS Kerrison also eliminates the time and cost of reprocessing, ensuring that sterilization equipment is always available when needed. Proffitt said, “Spartan has used the ‘target backward’ mentality to listen to VA and DoD surgeons’ issues in the field, and have developed best-in-class solutions to meet their needs.” I added.
At the same time as this press release, Spartan is publishing a white paper addressing “challenges regarding Kerrison Sharpness, safety and the benefits of disposable, barren, pre-packaged (SSP) devices.” Furthermore, recent studies have also shown that disposable surgical instruments such as Spartan’s SAS Kerrison have lower impact on reusable lifecycle environments.
