Maternal depression linked to weakest ties

Maternal depression linked to weakest ties

ABSTRACT: A comprehensive global review confirms that maternal depression undermines children, harms the mother-child union and reduces sensitivity to the needs of a child. The researchers analyzed almost a decade of observation studies, finding consistent links between depressive symptoms and the least participation, commitment and emotional connection.

Mothers with depression were less likely to smile, touch or enjoy interactions with their children, while showing more hostility and inconsistent discipline. These findings reinforce the need for specific interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, to support both mothers and children.

Key facts:

Global evidence: 97% of the studies reviewed found maternal depression associated with poorer parenting practices. Adhesive links: correlated depression with a children’s bond of deteriorated mother and less emotional commitment. Impact of the intervention: Therapies such as TCC and full attention can improve the raising of children and family welfare.

Mothers who experience depression have considerable challenges in multiple parenting domains, according to a global systematic review published in the July edition of Harvard Review of Psychiatry.

Maternal depression is defined as the major depressive disorder (MDD) that occurs during pregnancy or emerges within 4 to 30 weeks after birth.

Tiago N. Munhoz, PHD, a psychologist at the Federal University of Balls, Balls, Brazil, and his colleagues found that 97% of the observation studies published in the last decade demonstrated an association between maternal depression and negative parenting practices.

“Understanding this relationship is crucial to develop effective psychological methods and interventions,” they emphasize.

The updated review was global and had no language restrictions

Until now, the most recent systematic review to explore the association between maternal depression and the raising of children only included the data collected until 2013 and was limited to English reports.

To find more recent evidence, Dr. Munhoz’s team recorded the Medline/Pubmed, Scielo, BVS, Lilacs, Embase, Web of Science and Psychinfo databases for articles published from November 2013 to 2023.

They included observation studies in which mothers were diagnosed with MDD or were examined to detect depressive symptoms after childbirth or in the youth or adolescence of their children.

The researchers sought studies on parenting practices, specific behaviors aimed at children, and excluded those related to parenting styles (for example, authoritarian, permissive or negligent). They selected 29 articles for data extraction: 27 published in English and two in Portuguese.

Of these, 10 studies were conducted in Europe/Central Asia, six in East Asia/El Pacífico, six in Latin America/the Caribbean, five in North America and two in the Middle East/Africa. Eight studies were conducted in middle -income countries and one in a low -income country. Some studies implied the recording of interactions between mothers and children.

Maternal depression was linked to joining the mother-bebé union and a reduced sensitivity

Fourteen studies investigated the mother-good union, and everyone found that maternal depression harmed this link. In studies that used both the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression scale and the postpartum Union questionnaire, the highest depression scale scores indicated more damage to the link.

Four studies showed that women who did not manifest depressive symptoms joined more with their babies than women who were depressed or experienced depressive symptoms throughout their lives.

Maternal depression was also associated with:

Low sensitivity (recognizing and responding to the needs of a child) reduces participation (participation in daily interactions and activities) decreased commitment (which meets child care responsibilities) less smiling, touching or interacting with the pleasure of Babydecrido when interacting with negative emotions to the vespertine embedd embedded that interacts with interaction with negative hostility.

A study did not find significant associations between maternal depression (during pregnancy and postpartum) and sensitivity or positive consideration for the child. That study was conducted in the United States and involved 36 mother-children’s días of low income.

“(E) Xisting’s literature suggests that depression alking interventions based on cognitive behavioral therapy and full attention improve relationships between parents and children and reduce negative behaviors of raising children,” the authors remind their colleagues. “Such tactics benefit maternal well -being and general family dynamics.”

“The impact of maternal depression on early parenting: a systematic review” by Tiago N. Munhoz et al. Harvard Review of Psychiatry

Abstract

The impact of maternal depression on early parenting: a systematic review

Background

Maternal depression is a risk factor established for breeding interruptions with potential consequences for child development. Although previous studies have examined the effects of maternal depression on children’s behaviors, the most recent systematic reviews and meta -analysis only include data until 2013.

Given evolving perspectives and methodologies, updated ideas are necessary. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on the association between maternal depression and the raising of children during the last decade.

Method

Systematic searches were made in Medline/Pubmed, Scielo, BVS, Lilacs, Embase, Web of Science and Psychinfo without language restrictions. The search focused on studies published between 2013 and 2023. The inclusion criteria were composed of observation studies that evaluated the raising of children between mothers diagnosed with depression during youth or adolescence of their children. Of the 11,305 projected studies, 166 were completely reviewed by two independent reviewers, which resulted in 29 eligible studies. Gray literature was not included.

Results

Among the 29 studies, 28 reported an association between maternal depression and the raising of children. The majority were carried out in high -income countries, focused on children under 36 months and used transverse designs.

Two thirds were published after 2017. The limitations of this review include predominantly studies of high -income environments, exclusive evaluation of parenting practices without broader breeding constructions and the absence of meta -analysis.

Conclusion

The findings constantly highlight the association between maternal depression and negative breeding practices, influencing sensitivity, affection, attachment, participation, commitment, response capacity and stimulation. Mothers who experience depression face challenges in these domains, which can affect child development.

Future research should explore these associations in various sociocultural contexts and include longitudinal studies to better understand the long -term effects.
